Troels Wörsel

The Danish artist Troels Wörsel (1950 - 2018) moved to Germany in the late 1970's, and played an important part on the Scandinavian and European art scene until his untimely death in 2018. Wörsel was a painter concerned with the constructive problems and aspects of the medium, and of its limitless possibilities. He extracted and adapted picture-making elements such as color, motif, technique, composition and perspective, and reintroduced them into the paintings surface. His work is characterized by experiments in their execution, like painting with help of an electric drill, and in their composition where taut geometric surface patterns can incorporate both personal and found imagery. Wörsel is represented in the collections of a.o Städtisches Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Washington Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the MoMA in New York. Wörsel was in 2002 the first-prize winner of the Carnegie Art Awards, and was Denmark's representative in the 2007 Venice Biennial. He lived and worked in Cologne, Germany and Pietresanta, Italy.
