Eline Mugaas

Eline Mugaas (b. 1969) received her artistic education from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York. Mugaas currently lives and works in Oslo. After nearly a decade in New York and having garnered various photographic and scenographic commissions, Mugaas returned to Norway in 2000, where the public was first introduced to her work in a breakthrough exhibition "Let me be your one way street" at Fotogalleriet (The Photographers' Gallery) in 1996. Mugaas has concentrated on photographing urban, everyday motifs; and her works possess a dynamic quality that borders on the painterly. There is a forthrightness and immediacy in the depictions, and the style of execution is sensual. This allows the beholder to discover novelty even in everyday scenarios. She also works with film and collage and curating, receiving praise for Hold stenhårdt fast på greia di, an exhibition of activist and feminist art she co-curated with Elise Storsveen for Kunsthall Oslo in 2013. With Storsveen she has since 2008 published the fanzine ALBUM. In 2016, Mugaas published the book Siri Aurdal by Eline Mugaas, which recontextualizes Aurdal's artistry and led to reconstructions of Aurdal's previous works along with extensive exhibitions. Mugaas received the prestigious Lorck Schive Art Prize from the Trondheim kunstmuseum in 2019.
