Arne Malmedal

Arne Malmedal (b. 1937, d. 2018) was educated at the National College of Art and Design, Oslo, and held his first solo show in 1963. Alongside regular exhibition activity, he was a vital figure on the Norwegian art scene. He was the founder and head of the department of Graphic Art at the National College of Arts and Craft in Oslo in the 1970s; and as the Administrative Director at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo in the 1980s, he contributed to the realization and introduction of important exhibitions and artists to the Norwegian audience. In 2003/04, Malmedal was honored with a retrospective exhibition and accompanying monograph at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo which also traveled to the Bergen Art Museum. Malmedal's work is marked by exploration and experiments in relation to space/plane, picture/frame, and color/brushstroke. His work spans from minimal color-field paintings to natural lyricism to mental spaces of vast illusional depth. The use of e.g. paint rollers gives recent paintings an opulent texture, yielding a tangible and vigorous presence.
